Can Arsenal win a trophy this season?

Mesut Ozil is looking to help bring trophies to Arsenal this season

Arsenal's new signing Mesut Ozil has voiced his confidence that the Gunners can win a trophy this season.

It's a long shot if you ask me.

As an Arsenal fan you might assume (and quite rightly) that I'd be on a high from Sunday's 1-0 win over Spurs. There's no doubt about it - that win was definitely needed to lift spirits at the Emirates - but it must be said Mr Ozil, Arsenal's chances of a trophy this season are limited.

As expected the Champions League and Premier League are out of sight, leaving only the Capital One Cup and FA Cup, which of course are both winnable - winnable being dependent on Arsenal having a good run of form, steering clear of injuries (good luck with that one Arsene!) and most importantly a solid defence.

While Arsenal have bolstered their attack by signing Ozil, additions are still needed in defence, as shown by the display in the Villa game. You can have the firepower of as many Cazorlas and Ozils as you want but every successful team builds its foundations on a strong defence, as Wenger would have told you back in 2004 (oh, the memories!).

With this said, it wouldn't be too big of a statement to say that Arsenal would be genuine title contenders if they went into every game with their starting XI. In the modern game of hectic footballing schedules, this is just not possible and players must be rotated. Injuries are almost a certainty (as we have seen already with Oxlade-Chamberlain) and beyond the starting XI Arsenal's team starts to look mediocre.

To be honest only time will tell. Predicting how Arsenal's season will pan out is always a tricky one (just ask any of the BBC's football pundits). Arsene Wenger always seems to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Perhaps this time the rabbit will look like an FA Cup trophy.

What do you think? Are the Capital One Cup and FA Cup both realistic targets for Arsenal this season? Is Ozil setting the bar too high for the Gunners? Let me know in the comments below.
